PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State jumped out to an 8-1 lead and rapped a season's best 18 hits, but the No. 18-ranked Cardinals had to hang on for an 11-6 victory against visiting Saint Lawrence in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday at Chip Cummings Field. Junior college transfer Anthony Presto had a career-high four hits in a Plattsburgh uniform, Danny Roeser was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle and Tory Bouyea also had three hits to pace the Cardinals' offensive attack.
The Saints lost for only the third time in their last 10 outings to drop to 12-10. The Cardinals improve to 21-4 overall after sweeping their season series from their North Country neighbors; Plattsburgh also won 11-4 in Canton on April 6.
SLU began a furious rally late in the game by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning to close within 8-3. After Plattsburgh got three runs back in the home half of the frame, the Saints answered again in the ninth with three more on three walks, two costly Cardinals errors and only a single to make it 11-6 and still threatening. With two outs and the bases loaded, relief pitcher Brian Burns struck out the only batter he faced with the potential-tying run on-deck to pick up his second save of the season.
Burns made a winner out of Matt Seymour (1-0) in his first collegiate start, who scattered four hits, two walks and three hit batsmen over seven innings while allowing three runs. Casey Mohrien was the first reliever out of the bullpen, working a scoreless eighth with one strikeout.
Bryan Brennan had three of SLU's five hits, including a double. Ryan Duff had two runs batted in on two groundouts to shortstop. Carter Franz added a RBI-double in the eighth and Jeff Kott also had a single.
Eight of Plattsburgh's nine starters in the lineup had at least one hit. Pat Shaughnessy had two and knocked in three runs, and Casey Brighton stroked a two-run single up the middle for a 2-1 lead in the first.
