PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team received strong pitching performances on Saturday from Matt O'Leary and Dan Tracy as the Cardinals swept both ends of a non-conference doubleheader over host Saint Joseph's-Long Island, 3-2 and 5-1, at Alfano Field. The Cardinals (15-1) extend their school-record win streak to 15 games while the Eagles dip to 6-10.
In the opener, O'Leary (3-0) scattered six hits and three walks with four strikeouts while going the distance. He carried a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning when a Cardinal error led to a pair of SJ-LI unearned runs.
Tory Bouyea and Pat Shaughnessy led Plattsburgh with two hits apiece. O'Leary got all the offense he needed in the third inning when, after two outs, Bouyea had a run-scoring single and Donny Coolidge extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a two-run double to right-center field.
Coolidge saw his school-record hit streak come to an end in the nightcap, going 0-for-3 with a run batted in. Coming into this afternoon's play, he had shared the record with Jewish Sports Review All-American Matt Kahan.
Tracy improved to 4-0 after working a complete game in which he allowed five hits and two walks. He retired seven batters in a row and 9 out of 10 at one point, and gave up just two hits over the last four innings. He lowered his season earned-run average from 2.53 to 2.24.
After spotting the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Plattsburgh tied it in the second on Shaughnessy's fourth home run of the season to left field. The Cardinals went ahead for good with three runs in the next frame, which was sparked by a RBI-single from Bouyea.
Shaughnessy and Anthony Presto each had two hits for Plattsburgh, which outhit SJ-LI 13 to 11 on the day.
