FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team scored 23 runs and ripped 27 hits on Monday to sweep Bethel University in a non-conference doubleheader, 9-7 and 14-7, at Terry Park during the Cardinals' second day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate. Plattsburgh improves to 7-1 while the Royals fall to 4-5.
In the opener, Tory Bouyea tripled to right field to score Danny Roeser to break a 6-6 deadlock in the top of the sixth inning. The Cardinals tacked on two more insurance runs later in the inning for a 9-6 lead.
Bouyea went 2-for-3 at the plate, scored twice and had four runs batted in. Donny Coolidge also had two hits, including a double, two runs and drove in two more.
Tyler Greene (2-0) earned the win in relief. He allowed no earned runs, four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in three innings of work.
Plattsburgh scored six runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 4-0 deficit and get back into the contest.
The Cardinals got out of the gate quickly in the nightcap, scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning and taking a 12-1 advantage after two.
Andrew Gooch led Plattsburgh's season-high 17-hit attack by going 4-for-4, including a double, and three RBI. Anthony Presto, Casey Brighton, Greg Larnerd, Pat Shaughnessy, Bouyea and Roeser also had a multi-hit game with two each.
Casey Mohrien (2-0) picked up the win in relief, working 3-1/3 innings. He allowed a run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Shaughnessy slammed a two-run blast over the left-field wall, his first of the season, to cap the eight-run second, which he led off with a single.
