ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team found itself on the losing end of a hard fought battle with Oneonta, falling 2-1, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championship game. With the victory, Oneonta claims the 2010 SUNYAC women’s soccer championship and improves to 15-4-2 overall. The Cardinals fall to 15-3-1.
Oneonta struck first at 21:30 in the first half as Karly DeSimone scored on a header off a corner kick by Nha Wright. Wright followed with a goal of her own at 34:59 off a penalty kick, giving the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Liz Radigan put the Cardinals on the board late in the second half, netting her eighth goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Plattsburgh edged Oneonta in shots, 13-12, while Oneonta held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-0. Lindsey Keyser took three shots for the Cardinals, followed by Radigan, Megan Rivage and Kayla Rabideau with two shots apiece.
Alina Greiser recorded six saves and suffered the loss. Oneonta goalkeeper Amy Lusby also picked up six saves on the afternoon.
Seniors Radigan, Erin Norris and Emily Riley were named to the 2010 All-Tournament team.
The Cardinals now await their fate, which will be determined when the women’s selections for the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament are announced Monday morning. Plattsburgh must receive an at-large bid to participate in the NCAA tournament.
