PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After falling behind in the first period, the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the second period to earn a 7-4 comeback win against the St. John’s Johnnies. With the win, the Cardinals, who improve to 4-4-0, are set to take on the Norwich Cadets for the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut Championship.
The Johnnies attacked first on Joe Harren’s third of the year at 6:06 of the first period. Plattsburgh answered a minute later as Cody Adams blasted one past Johnnies’ goaltender Tony Civello. Harren picked up a short-handed goal at 8:11 of the period to put the Johnnies up 2-1, but the Cardinals tied it up on a Dylan Clarke at 16:46. With under two minutes to go in the first, Mike Wallgren netted an unassisted goal to give St. John’s a 3-2 lead.
That lead would not hold as the Cardinals came out flying in the second period. Vick Schlueter tallied his first of the season and Eric Satim and Patrick Jobb each scored power-play goals power-play goals to give Plattsburgh a two goal lead after two periods of play.
Dan Sliasis stretched the Plattsburgh lead to 6-3 with just a minute and a half gone in the third period. St. John’s continued to fight with Justin Brausen scoring the Johnnies’ fourth goal, but it would not be enough as Clarke tipped in his second of the night from Paul Puglisi and Barry Roytman.
The Cardinals held the edge in shots, 40-26. Josh Leis was credited with the win, making 22 stops. Civello recorded 33 saves for the Johnnies.
St. John’s falls to 2-7-0 and will take on the Middlebury Panthers tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Third Place Game. The Championship game, featuring Norwich and Plattsburgh, will follow at 7 p.m.
