PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh men’s hockey team defeated Concordia University, 6-2, in an exhibition game to unofficially open the 2010-11 season. Matt Bessing scored two goals in the Cardinal victory.
Plattsburgh looks to begin the regular season this weekend (Oct. 29-30) against conference opponents Geneseo and Brockport on the road. The Stingers, who are members of the Quebec Student Sports Federation Conference, fall to 5-2. Per NCAA rules, statistics and results of this meeting do not count against the Cardinals’ record.
Just 28 seconds into the game, Eric Satim struck first for Plattsburgh. Jared Docking put the Cardinals ahead for good with 12:43 left in the first period. Concordia’s Eric Begin put the Stingers on the board at 17:35, to make the score 2-1 heading into the second period.
Matt Bessing scored his first goal of the game at 12:47 of the second period. Ian DeLong and Kyle Kudroch were credited with assists on the power-play goal. Concordia retaliated with 31 seconds left in the period as Derek Famulare found the net on an assist by Olivier Jannard.
The Cardinals put the game away in the third period with three power-play goals by Kudroch at 12:47, Vick Schlueter at 13:49 and Bessing at 16:19.
The Cardinals dominated Concordia in shots, 52-26.
Plattsburgh used all three goaltenders in Josh Leis (8 saves), Ryan Williams (6 saves) and Sam Foley (10 saves). In net for Concordia, Sean Coulton made 46 saves.
