Cardinals Take RPI Classic; Three Named All-Tournament

TROY, N.Y. - A goal scored off a penalty kick in the 74th minute of play broke the tie between the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team and Union (N.Y.), securing a 2-1 victory for the Cardinals in the final round of the 2009 RPI Classic. Liz Radigan, who scored the winning goal, Emily Riley and Kaitlin Collica were all named to the all-tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.Plattsburgh now holds a perfect season record of 3-0, while the Dutchwomen fall to 1-1 overall.

Earlier in the game, Radigan beat a defender to the ball at the edge of the box on the far side and crossed to Leigh Metcalf. Metcalf one-timed the ball past the goalkeeper into the right corner at the 15:38 mark, giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.

Union tied the game up in the 32nd minute when Jessica Strang passed the ball up from midfield to Katie McLean.  McLean then raced up the field, one-touched the ball around a defender and beat a diving goalie into the low left corner of the net.

Alina Greiser recorded her second win of the season in goal for Plattsburgh, along with four saves during the contest. Abby Stohler picked up six saves for the Dutchwomen, along with the loss. All in all, Plattsburgh out shot Union 16-9 and each side took four corner kicks.

Next up for Plattsburgh is a home game against Castleton State next Saturday, September 12, at 7 p.m.
