PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team grinded out their second State University of New York Athletic conference win against a strong Geneseo Blue Knights squad. For the second-straight game the Cardinals took their opponent into overtime, but this time walked away with a win.Plattsburgh now holds a season record of 7-1-1, 2-0-1 in the SUNYAC. Meanwhile, Geneseo falls to 5-3-1 for the year, 0-2-1 in conference play.
Despite Geneseo dominating statistically, the Cardinals scored the only goal of the game with 12 seconds to go in the first overtime. Freshmen forward Kristin Pageau broke away from a Geneseo defender and crossed the ball to Emily Riley, who struck a shot past a diving goaltender for her fourth goal of the season.
Geneseo took 11 shots on goal compared to Plattsburgh’s five. The Blue Knights controlled the ball for most of the second half and took seven more corner kicks than the Cardinals, eight total.
Freshmen goalies Alina Greiser and Ricci Celia combined for Plattsburgh’s fifth shutout of the season. In the 52nd minute, Greiser left the game after falling on her back while catching a corner kick by Geneseo forward Jane Matejcik. Ricci Celia came in for Gresier and played 47 solid minutes, improving her record to 4-0-1.
The nationally-ranked No. 11 Cardinals will travel to Oswego to take on the 4-4 Oswego State Lakers on Friday, October 2, at 4 p.m.
