PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team continued its undefeated start to the 2026 season on Senior Day, defeating VTSU-Castleton to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Cardinals entered the contest having recorded three consecutive 7-0 victories and carried that momentum into their home matchup against the Spartans.
The Cardinals got off to a strong start in doubles play, earning victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 1, senior Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and senior Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) defeated Brooke Hecker and Andrea Rodriguez, 6-4. At No. 2, sophomore Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and sophomore Mirabelle Nonni (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) cruised to a 6-1 victory over Olivia Rutkowski and Grace Pluff.
Plattsburgh State continued its dominant performance in singles play, winning all six matches.
Mitchell led the way at No. 1 singles, blanking Hecker, 6-0, 6-0. Carey followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Rutkowski at No. 2 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Marino battled past Rodriguez, 7-5, 7-6, while sophomore Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pluff at No. 4.
Graduate student Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) overcame McKearin at No. 5 singles, rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory in a tightly contested match. First-year Paige Westfall (Brewerton, N.Y.) rounded out the Cardinals' singles sweep with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Emma Johnson at No. 6.
With the victory, Plattsburgh State continues its unbeaten start to the season, improving to 4-0 overall. The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when they travel to face Plymouth State.
