Cardinals Blank VTSU-Johnson, Improve to 9-1

JOHNSON, Vt. — The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2026 season on Wednesday, earning a dominant 7-0 victory over VTSU-Johnson on the road. The Cardinals entered the match with an 8-1 record and did not drop a set in the victory, improving to 9-1 overall.

Plattsburgh opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) and sophomore Mirabelle Nonni (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) earned a 6-0 victory over Caitlyn Morey and Samantha Armstrong. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Bianca Buel (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and senior Julia Gyebi (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) also posted a 6-0 win over Roslyn Gibbons and Rose Oakland. Graduate student Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and sophomore Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0 forfeit victory at No. 3 doubles.

The Cardinals carried their momentum into singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Marino cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Morey at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Armstrong at No. 2 singles.

Tubo blanked Gibbons, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Nonni recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Oakland at No. 4 singles. Gyebi also posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 5 singles, defeating Evangelica Luneau. Macdougal rounded out the singles sweep at No. 6, earning a forfeit victory.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 9-1 overall on the season. Plattsburgh State returns home and to conference play on Saturday, hosting Oswego at 1 p.m.
