PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team returned home and to SUNYAC play Saturday afternoon, falling to Oswego in a conference matchup. The Cardinals entered the contest at 9-1 overall and 2-0 in SUNYAC play.
Oswego opened the match by sweeping all three doubles contests to take an early advantage.
At No. 1 doubles, seniors Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) battled Emily DeLuca and Leah Bell before falling, 6-4. Oswego also earned 6-0 victories at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, with sophomore Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and sophomore Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) falling to Kate Hayes and Isabella Eason, while sophomore Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and sophomore Mirabelle Nonni (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) were defeated by Avery Borman and Aubrey Salati.
The Cardinals responded strongly in singles play, winning three of the six matches. Mitchell earned a three-set victory at No. 1 singles, overcoming Borman, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. Carey followed with another three-set triumph at No. 2, rallying past Bell, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5.
At No. 6 singles, Macdougal also secured a straight-set victory, defeating Hannah Freed, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 5 singles, senior Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) battled Hayes through three sets. Tubo took the second set, 6-4, before Hayes claimed the deciding set, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Marino fell to DeLuca, 6-2, 6-0, while Perry dropped her No. 4 singles match against Eason, 6-1, 6-2.
Despite winning three of the six singles matches, the Cardinals were unable to overcome Oswego's advantage from doubles play.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State moves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals continue conference play Monday, taking on Oneonta at 4 p.m. at Union College in a neutral-site matchup.
