ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to SUNY Oneonta in a rescheduled State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Monday at Union College.
The Cardinals entered the match with a 9-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in conference play after falling to Oswego in their previous outing. With the loss, Plattsburgh moves to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in SUNYAC play.
Plattsburgh opened the afternoon by earning a victory at first doubles. Senior Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and senior Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) defeated Oneonta's Annika Cripe and Haley Peck, 6-4, to give the Cardinals an early point.
Oneonta responded by taking the second and third doubles matches. Taylor Plue and Kiersten Rufrano defeated sophomore Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and sophomore Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), 6-3, at No. 2 doubles, while Dakota Jimenez and Ashley Glaviano edged sophomore Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) and first-year Paige Westfall (Brewerton, N.Y.), 7-5, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Marino picked up Plattsburgh's lone singles victory at No. 4, cruising past Rufrano, 6-0, 6-1.
The Cardinals battled throughout the remaining singles matches. At No. 1 singles, Mitchell pushed Peck through a competitive three-set match before falling, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4. At No. 2, Carey dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Cripe.
Perry also went three sets at No. 3 singles, falling to Plue, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, graduate student Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was defeated by Jimenez, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 6 singles, Macdougal battled back after dropping the opening set to defeat Reagan Knapp, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3, securing Plattsburgh's second singles victory of the afternoon.
The Cardinals now move to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Plattsburgh takes a break from conference competition Wednesday, traveling to Saint Michael's for a season rematch.
