CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2026 season on the road Tuesday, earning a 6-1 victory over VTSU-Castleton in a rematch between the two teams.
The Cardinals entered the match with a 6-1 overall record after earning their first conference win of the season against Fredonia. Plattsburgh State previously defeated the Spartans, 7-0, at home earlier this season and carried that momentum into Tuesday's rematch.
Plattsburgh opened the match by sweeping all three doubles contests to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) earned a 6-3 victory over Olivia Rutkowski and Brooke Hecker. Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y.) and Mirabelle Nonni (Essex Junction, Vt.) cruised to a 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles against Grace Pluff and Andrea Rodriguez. Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y.) and Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, defeating Halle Hipple and Maggie McKearin, 7-5.
The Cardinals continued their strong play in singles, winning five of the six matches. Mitchell picked up a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Hecker, 6-2, 6-4, while Carey followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Rutkowski at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y.) recorded a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory over Rodriguez. Perry also cruised to a straight-set win at No. 4, defeating Pluff, 6-3, 6-0. Plattsburgh closed out the match with another dominant performance at No. 6 singles, as Paige Westfall (Brewerton, N.Y.) blanked Hipple, 6-0, 6-0.
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 7-1 overall on the season. Plattsburgh State returns to SUNYAC action on the road Friday, when the Cardinals travel to Delhi for a 3 p.m. matchup.
