PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2026 season Tuesday, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Russell Sage in its home opener.
The Cardinals entered play fresh off commanding back-to-back 7-0 sweeps on opening weekend and carried that momentum into an early-season rematch with the Gators, earning their third consecutive shutout victory to open the season.
Plattsburgh got off to a strong start in doubles play, taking two of the three matches to secure the doubles point. First-year Paige Westfall (Brewerton, N.Y.) and sophomore Mirabelle Nonni (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) dominated at No. 2 doubles, earning a 6-0 victory over Katie Snell and Amber Elk. Sophomore Bianca Buel (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and senior Julia Gyebi (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) followed with an identical 6-0 triumph at No. 3 doubles against Mackenzie Clogston and Makayla Julian.
The Cardinals carried their momentum into singles play, sweeping all six matches in straight sets.
Senior Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) opened singles competition with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brynn Weaver at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, senior Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Snell.
Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) continued at No. 3 singles, defeating Alexa Cupernall, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) also surrendered just one game in her 6-3, 6-0 victory over Elk at No. 4 singles.
Senior Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) cruised past Clogston, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, while Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) completed the singles sweep with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Aleah Morales at No. 6.
With the win, the Cardinals continue their unbeaten start, improving to 3-0 on the season. Plattsburgh State returns to action Saturday, when it hosts Castleton for Senior Day.
