CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team opened conference play on a strong note Saturday, earning a decisive victory over Fredonia after entering the match with a 5-1 record on the season.
The Cardinals, who were coming off their first loss of the season against Division II Saint Michael's, responded with a strong performance in both doubles and singles play to begin their conference schedule on the right foot.
Plattsburgh swept all three doubles matches to take an early lead. At No. 1 doubles, senior Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and senior Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) earned a 6-0 victory over Lucy Prevet and Gabbi Farr. Mirabelle Nonni (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) followed with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles against Allison Bartoszek and Amelia Stathatos, while Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0 forfeit victory at No. 3.
The Cardinals carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of the six matches. Mitchell continued her strong day at No. 1 singles, defeating Prevet, 6-4, 6-2. Carey also secured a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Farr, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, Perry posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Emily Solazzo, while graduate student Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Stathatos at No. 5. Paige Westfall (Brewerton, N.Y.) completed the Cardinals' singles victories at No. 6, earning a forfeit win.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Plattsburgh State will look to carry its momentum into a season rematch on the road against VTSU-Castleton on Tuesday.
