PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team opened competition for the Cardinals' fall sports season in strong fashion on the road Saturday, earning a convincing 7-0 victory over Russell Sage College. Plattsburgh entered the match looking to build on a 7-0 victory over the Gators last season and once again swept the matchup.
The Cardinals got off to a fast start in doubles play, sweeping all three matches to take a lead heading into singles competition.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and senior Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) earned a 6-0 victory over Annabella Putnam and Brynn Weaver. Sophomores Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) followed with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles against Alexa Cupernall and Katie Snell. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) and sophomore Mirabelle Nonni (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0 victory over Mackenzie Clogston and Makayla Julian.
Plattsburgh continued its dominant play in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets.
Mitchell opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Weaver at No. 1 singles, while Carey recorded a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Putnam at No. 2. Perry also posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Snell.
At No. 4 singles, Marino cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Cupernall. Graduate student Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Clogston at No. 5 singles, and first-year Paige Westfall (Brewerton, N.Y.) closed out the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Aleah Morales at No. 6.
With the win, the Cardinals start the season off strong, improving to 1-0 on the season. Plattsburgh State will be back in action tomorrow, on the road against Western Connecticut State University, with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m.
