PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Canton on Tuesday, taking game one by a score of 10-6 before rallying for a 6-5 walk-off victory in game two to open a three-game conference series.
In the opener, Canton struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Jared Paone. The Cardinals answered in the second, as Jackson Pam (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) lined a two-run single to center to score Jonathan Beale (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) and Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) and take a 2-1 lead.
Plattsburgh broke the game open in the third inning with a six-run outburst. Austin Caldwell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) highlighted the frame with a two-run double to left-center, while Beale added a sacrifice fly. Pam and Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) each drove in runs with singles, and the Cardinals capitalized on wild pitches to extend the lead to 8-1.
Canton chipped away with a run in the fourth, but Plattsburgh responded immediately as Beale tripled home Piccirillo to make it 9-2. The Roos added two runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth, but the Cardinals maintained control. Caldwell added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to secure the 10-6 victory.
Game two saw Canton jump out to an early lead, scoring in each of the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings to build a 4-0 advantage. Plattsburgh responded in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run rally. Martin drove in the first run with a single, and the Cardinals took advantage of a wild pitch and another miscue to tie the game at 4-4.
Canton regained the lead in the sixth, but Plattsburgh answered again in the seventh when Frankie Kowal (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) doubled down the left field line to score Pam and even the score at 5-5.
After holding Canton scoreless in the top of the ninth, the Cardinals completed the comeback in the bottom half. With runners on, Piccirillo delivered a walk-off single up the middle, scoring Pam and sealing the 6-5 victory.
With the sweep, the Cardinals move to 13-13 overall and 4-10 in conference play. Plattsburgh will return to action on the road tomorrow at Clarkson.
