Cardinals Outlast Clarkson in 22-16 Slugfest, Extend Win Streak to Four

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Riding a three-game winning streak, the Plattsburgh State baseball team stayed hot on the road with a wild 22-16 victory over Clarkson in a high-scoring affair.

The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first, as junior Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) drove in sophomore Marc Cancelliere (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) with an RBI groundout to give Plattsburgh an early 1-0 lead.

Plattsburgh broke the game open in the second inning, erupting for four runs. Cancelliere delivered an RBI single, followed by junior Frankie Kowal (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) plating another with a base hit to center. Junior Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) came around to score later in the inning, while Piccirillo added his second RBI of the day with a groundout. A wild pitch allowed Martin to score, extending the advantage to 5-0.

Clarkson responded in the bottom half of the second with a pair of runs, but the Cardinals answered emphatically in the third inning with their biggest offensive frame of the day. Kowal and Piccirillo each drove in runs with singles before junior Ian Warren (Esopus, N.Y./Highland) delivered a two-run knock up the middle. Additional runs crossed on defensive miscues, and first-year Logan Provost (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) added an RBI single, pushing the lead to a commanding 12-2.

After Clarkson picked up a run in the fourth, Plattsburgh continued to pour it on in the fifth. Warren highlighted the inning with an RBI double, while senior Bostyn Duquette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run. Cancelliere later added a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 15-3.

Clarkson chipped away with two runs in the fifth, but the Cardinals added another in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk by Provost to make it 16-5.

The game took a dramatic turn late, however, as Clarkson mounted a furious comeback. After scoring two runs in the seventh, the Golden Knights erupted for nine runs in the eighth inning, capitalizing on walks, hit batters, and multiple errors to tie the game at 16-16.

Facing a suddenly even game, the Cardinals responded in the ninth with resilience. Piccirillo delivered the decisive blow, launching a three-run home run to left field to reclaim the lead. Senior Ryan Hart (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) followed with an RBI single, and Cancelliere drove in two more with a base hit to cap off the scoring at 22-16.

With the win, the Cardinals move to 14-13 and will be back in action tomorrow as they begin a pivotal three-game series on the road against New Paltz, as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive.
