PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team wrapped up its three-game SUNYAC series against Oneonta with a doubleheader on Sunday, falling in the opener before bouncing back to earn a split on the day.
In game one Oneonta jumped out early and never looked back, taking control with a big second inning en route to a 12-2 victory in the first game of the twin bill.
The Red Dragons opened the scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to grab a 1-0 lead, then broke the game open in the second. A wild pitch plated a run before another sacrifice fly made it 3-0. Oneonta continued to string together quality at-bats, adding RBI singles before a two-run single capped a six-run inning and extended the lead to 7-0.
Oneonta added on in the fourth with an RBI double and pushed two more runs across in the fifth, taking advantage of another wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to build a 10-0 cushion.
Plattsburgh got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) scored on an RBI single to right center from first-year Braden Calkins (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh), and junior Jackson Pam (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) followed with a run-scoring single through the left side to cut the deficit to 10-2.
The Red Dragons answered with two runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Plattsburgh responded in game two with timely hitting and solid run production, earning a 7-4 victory to salvage the split.
After Oneonta struck first with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning, the Cardinals answered immediately in the bottom half. Senior Colin Ross (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) launched a two-run home run to right center, scoring junior Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and giving Plattsburgh a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals added to their advantage in the second inning, as Martin delivered again with a two-run single to center field, bringing home first-year David Wallace (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and junior Frankie Kowal (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) to make it 4-1.
Oneonta chipped away in the third with an RBI double, but Plattsburgh regained momentum in the sixth when Piccirillo blasted a solo home run to left field, extending the lead to 5-2.
The Red Dragons made things interesting in the eighth inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout to pull within one at 5-4. Plattsburgh quickly responded in the bottom half, as Calkins drove in a run with a single through the left side, scoring first-year Aman Aery (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West). Calkins later came around to score on an RBI single from Kowal, providing key insurance runs and pushing the lead to 7-4.
The Cardinals held firm the rest of the way to secure the victory.
With the split, the Cardinals move to 11-13 overall and 2-10 in conference play. Plattsburgh will be back in action tomorrow on the road against Clarkson.
