PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State baseball team returned to conference action in its SUNYAC home opener and delivered a dramatic finish, walking off Oneonta, 7–6, in 10 innings.
Oneonta struck first with a three-run second inning, capitalizing on a pair of Cardinal errors to take an early 3–0 lead. The Red Dragons added another unearned run in the fourth on a wild pitch, extending their advantage to 4–0.
Plattsburgh responded in the bottom of the fourth with a four-run rally to even the score. Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) got the Cardinals on the board with an RBI single to center, bringing home Jonathan Beale (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys). Braden Calkins (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) followed with a two-run single to cut the deficit to one, and Jackson Pam (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) tied the game at 4–4 with an RBI double to right.
Oneonta regained the lead in the sixth inning, plating two runs on an RBI single from Zachary Rowe and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to go up 6–4.
The Cardinals answered again in the seventh. Pam delivered his second RBI double of the game to bring Plattsburgh within one, and Tyler Martin (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score the tying run and make it 6–6.
After both teams were held scoreless through the next two innings, the game moved to extras. In the bottom of the 10th, Colin Ross (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) ended the contest in emphatic fashion, blasting a walk-off home run to right field to secure the 7–6 victory for the Cardinals.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10–12 overall and 1–9 in conference play. Plattsburgh will return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Oneonta.
