Plattsburgh Falls to New Paltz in Conference Doubleheader

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team returned to SUNYAC play on Friday afternoon, hosting New Paltz for a conference doubleheader.

In the opening game, the Cardinals kept things tight early before New Paltz broke through midway through the contest. After three scoreless innings, the Hawks got on the board in the fourth as Ella Sharrock delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Kelsey O'Brien. Later in the inning, Mallory Rohon added another RBI single to push the lead to 2-0.

New Paltz extended its advantage in the sixth inning on a groundout by Alex Frenza that brought home a run, making it 3-0. The Hawks pulled away in the seventh, as Rohon picked up her second RBI of the game with a single before adding two more runs, sealing a 6-0 victory in game one.

In game two, New Paltz wasted no time taking control, erupting for four runs in the first inning. Maddie Anderson got things started with an RBI double before Kelsey O'Brien followed with a run-scoring single. Sharrock then capped the inning with a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

The Hawks added to their lead in the third on a sacrifice fly from Rohon and again in the fourth with an RBI single from Sharrock, extending the margin to 6-0.

Plattsburgh responded in the bottom of the fourth, getting on the board with a sacrifice fly from junior Alyssa Hemingway (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) that scored sophomore Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). The Cardinals added another run in the sixth inning when first-year Maya Weinerman (East Northport, N.Y./Elwood John Glenn) singled up the middle to bring home junior Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa), cutting the deficit to 6-2.

However, New Paltz answered in the seventh with an RBI single from Brianna Hardwick to account for the final 7-2 score.

With the sweep, the Cardinals fall to 10-15 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Plattsburgh will be back in action tomorrow as they wrap up the weekend with a conference doubleheader against Oneonta.
