NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team traveled to New Paltz for a midweek State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup, falling to the Hawks 20-2 on Wednesday evening at North Turf Field.
Sophomore attacker
Leah Klotz (Highland, N.Y. / Highland) and first-year midfielder
Juliana Conley (Valhalla, N.Y. / Valhalla) scored the only two goals for the Cardinals. Senior attacker
Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) added an assist, while sophomore attacker
Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) collected three draw controls and added two caused turnovers. First-year goalie
Aimee Lieman (Fair Lawn, N.J. / Fair Lawn) made 10 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh.
For the Hawks, Lexi Atwater finished with a game-high 11 points on eight goals and three assists. Allison Beattie followed with five points on two goals and three assists, while Izzy Miraglia made four saves in the win for New Paltz.
The Hawks held advantages in shots (40-8), ground balls (22-11), and draw controls (16-6). The Cardinals went scoreless on one free-position attempt, while New Paltz went 3-for-4. Plattsburgh finished 8-for-16 on clears, compared to 14-for-15 for New Paltz.
Lieman made six saves in the first quarter as Plattsburgh's defense faced 15 shots from the Hawks, limiting New Paltz offensively. The Cardinals' offense generated multiple shots on goal, but the New Paltz goalie did not allow anything through, and Plattsburgh trailed 3-0 after one quarter of action.
Unfortunately, after limiting the Hawks in the first, New Paltz added to its lead in the second quarter, and Plattsburgh went into halftime down 12-0.
The Cardinals added two goals in the second half, both coming in the fourth quarter. Barnosky found a cutting Conley for a doorstep finish at 6:41, followed by a goal from Klotz at 4:26 as she came around the crease and spun off her defender for the score.
Despite the two late goals, New Paltz created the separation it needed in the second half as Plattsburgh ultimately fell 20-2.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 2-11 (0-7 SUNYAC) and will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 18, traveling to Fredonia for a 12 p.m. opening draw.
