Cardinals Fall in Road Doubleheader at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team opened its week with a road non-conference doubleheader against St. Lawrence, falling in both contests despite early offensive production in each game.

In game one, the Cardinals came out strong, striking for three runs in the second inning to take an early lead. Leila Toomey (Commack, N.Y./Commack) put Plattsburgh on the board with an RBI single to center, scoring Natalie Rogers (Minisink, N.Y./Minisink Valley). Toomey then swiped second, and Alyssa Hemingway (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) crossed the plate on a throwing error to make it 2-0. Moments later, Jaylyn Linderman (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) drove in another run with a single up the middle, extending the advantage to 3-0.

St. Lawrence responded in the bottom half of the inning and used a decisive third inning to seize control. A two-run home run by Marleigh Monroe evened the score before the Saints capitalized on timely hitting and defensive miscues to plate five runs in the frame. St. Lawrence carried that momentum into the fourth, adding six more runs, highlighted by a three-run triple from Maeve Thompson, to secure a 13-3 run-rule victory.

Game two followed a similar script early, with Plattsburgh once again jumping out in front. In the second inning, Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) delivered an RBI double to left center to score Rogers and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Plattsburgh added another in the third when Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) doubled to left, bringing home Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) to make it 2-0.

St. Lawrence answered in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 2-2. The Cardinals regained the lead in the fifth behind Isaacs, who came through again with a two-run double to right center, scoring Stork and Linderman for a 4-2 edge.

The Saints responded once more in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs to even the score at 4-4. Plattsburgh broke the tie in the seventh, as Isaacs lifted a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Linderman to score and put the Cardinals ahead 5-4.

However, St. Lawrence delivered the final blow in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on, Madison Connelly singled to left field, driving in two runs to walk off the Cardinals and secure a 6-5 victory.

With the sweep, the Cardinals fall to 10-13 overall and will be back in action Friday as they return to conference play at home for a doubleheader against New Paltz.
