CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team capped off a dominant weekend on the road with a doubleheader sweep of Canton on Sunday, taking game one 10-0 before erupting for a 17-1 victory in game two.
After a quiet start through two innings, the Cardinals broke through in the third inning. Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) got Plattsburgh on the board with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Later in the frame, Natalie Rogers (Minisink, N.Y./Minisink Valley) added an RBI single to center to extend the lead to 2-0.
Plattsburgh added another run in the fifth when Rogers delivered again with an RBI double, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
The Cardinals put the game away in the seventh inning with a seven-run outburst. Stork drove in the first run of the inning with a double, scoring Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's), followed by an RBI double from Isaacs. Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) and Allison Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) each added RBI singles, while Jaylyn Linderman (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) highlighted the rally with a two-run single. Noll capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly, sealing the 10-0 shutout victory.
Plattsburgh wasted no time carrying its momentum into game two, scoring twice in the first inning. Gwen Noll opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Sara Isaacs followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The Cardinals extended their lead in the second inning, capitalizing on walks and defensive miscues to plate two more runs. Meghan Stork drew an RBI walk, while Isaacs reached on an error that brought home another run to make it 4-0.
In the fourth, Isaacs delivered a two-run home run to left field, scoring Noll, and Megan Pillus added a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Plattsburgh's offense exploded in the fifth inning, scoring 10 runs on a combination of timely hitting and Canton errors. Stork drove in a run with a walk before Isaacs struck again with a two-run double. Maya Weinerman (East Northport, N.Y./Elwood John Glenn) followed with a two-run double of her own, while Evelyn Paul (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), Leila Toomey (Commack, N.Y./Commack), Noll, and Stork each contributed RBIs as the Cardinals pushed their lead to 17-0.
Canton managed to score its lone run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Cardinals' early offensive surge proved more than enough to secure the 17-1 win.
With the sweep, the Cardinals improve to 10-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Plattsburgh will return to action Wednesday for midweek non-conference play against St. Lawrence.
