OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team opened its road weekend of conference play on Saturday with a SUNYAC doubleheader at Oswego.
After three scoreless innings in the opener, Oswego broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals answered right back in the fifth, as Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) delivered an RBI double to center field to score Maya Weinerman (East Northport, N.Y./Elwood John Glenn) and tie the game at 1-1.
The Lakers regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, using a bases-loaded walk to go back in front, 2-1. Plattsburgh continued to respond, however, tying the game again in the sixth when Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) tripled to right-center field to bring home Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's).
Oswego had the final say in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together a go-ahead RBI single to secure the 3-2 win.
The Cardinals jumped out to a fast start in game two, as Isaacs opened the scoring with an RBI double to left field, plating Noll, before Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 2-0.
Plattsburgh added to its advantage in the second inning, as Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) drove in a run on a groundout and Isaacs struck again with her second RBI double of the game, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 cushion.
Oswego responded with a decisive rally in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on an error before stringing together multiple extra-base hits. The Lakers plated seven runs in the frame to take a 7-4 lead.
The Cardinals attempted to chip away, getting an RBI sacrifice fly from Pillus in the third to make it 7-5. Oswego answered with two more runs in the bottom half, extending its lead to 9-5.
Plattsburgh refused to go away, as Isaacs launched a two-run home run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 9-7. The Cardinals continued to apply pressure in the fifth, as Leila Toomey (Commack, N.Y./Commack) scored to trim the margin to one at 9-8.
However, Oswego added an insurance run in the sixth inning, and the Cardinals were unable to complete the comeback, falling 10-8.
With the sweep, the Cardinals fall to 8-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Plattsburgh will be back in action tomorrow as it continues SUNYAC play on the road with a doubleheader at Canton.
