Middlebury, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State softball team opened its 2026 season Saturday with a road doubleheader at Middlebury College. The two programs entered the series with just 10 all-time meetings, with the Panthers holding a slight 6‑4 edge and the last matchup coming in 2018.
Middlebury jumped out early and often in the opener, earning a 9‑1 win over the Cardinals. The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the first, as Kristyn Carroll scored on an RBI groundout to make it 1‑0. Plattsburgh responded in the second with an RBI single from first-year Jaylyn Linderman (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint), scoring first-year Allison Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and tying the game at 1‑1.
From there, the Panthers broke things open. Middlebury tallied five runs in the second inning, including an RBI single by Olivia Scholes and a two‑run double by Reagan Adiletta, to take a commanding 6‑1 lead. The home side added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by a triple from Adiletta, an RBI double from Shayla LaFond, and a solo home run from Scholes in the sixth.
In game two, Middlebury rode another big offensive performance to an 11‑2 win. The Panthers struck for four runs in the second inning, including a two‑run homer by Katelyn Mikros and an RBI triple from Adiletta.
Plattsburgh State answered with a run in the third on a double from sophomore Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), and later added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from junior Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) to close within 4‑2. However, Middlebury broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven runs, highlighted by a three‑run double by Carroll and a three‑run home run by Jen Westphal, to make it 11‑2.
With the sweep, the Cardinals fall to 0‑2 on the young season. Plattsburgh will return to action as part of The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Cardinals will open play on Sunday, March 15, with a doubleheader against the University of New England at 9:00 a.m., followed by a matchup against Old Westbury, with first pitch scheduled for 11:15 a.m.
