Cards Sweep Opening Day to Kick Off Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team opened its Florida trip at The Spring Games with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, defeating the University of New England and Old Westbury in back‑to‑back games.

In the opener against the University of New England, the Cardinals battled a tight game before breaking through late. UNE took an early 1‑0 lead in the third inning, but Plattsburgh answered in the sixth when sophomore Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1‑1. The Cardinals then completed the comeback in the seventh, as first-year Allison Isaacs (Malta, NY/Shenendehowa) delivered a clutch RBI single that scored first-year Bella DeLorenzo (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) for the go‑ahead run and gave Plattsburgh a 2‑1 victory. Senior pitcher Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) earned the win in the circle, holding UNE's offense to one run on four hits over seven innings while striking out eight.

Game two featured an early Cardinals lead and continued offensive pressure against Old Westbury. Plattsburgh scored first in the opening frame on a double steal attempt, as senior Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored from third to give the Cardinals a 1‑0 advantage. The Cardinals extended their lead in the third inning when junior Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) blasted a two‑run home run to left, driving in Meghan Stork and giving Plattsburgh a 3‑0 lead. In the seventh, junior Alyssa Hemingway (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) added an RBI single that scored Sara Isaacs, sealing a 4‑0 victory. Junior Cadey Wheat (Edwards, N.Y./Edwards-Knox) picked up the win in the circle with a strong performance, tossing a complete game shutout while striking out seven.

The doubleheader marked just the second all‑time meeting between Plattsburgh and each of these programs in school history. With the sweep, the Cardinals improve to 2‑2 on the season. Plattsburgh will return to action for day two of The Spring Games on Monday, beginning with a 9 a.m. game against Franklin & Marshall followed by a matchup with Keuka at 11:15 a.m., with first pitch scheduled for both contests.
