CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team entered Tuesday evening's matchup at Dave Wolk Stadium with a 3-0 all-time record against the Spartans and extended that streak, getting back in the win column with a 15-9 victory over Vermont State University (VTSU) Castleton. Sophomore attackers
Maggie Maurer (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland) and
Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) led the way with a game-high five points each, scoring three goals and adding two assists apiece. O'Hara paced the Cardinals with five draw controls, and Maurer contributed two ground balls.
Sophomore attacker
Brooke Terry (Massena, N.Y. / Massena Central) and senior attacker
Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport) each recorded four points, as Terry finished with three goals and an assist, and Dickinson added two goals and two assists. Junior attacker
Ellie Macdonald (Burlington, Vt. / Burlington) contributed three goals as well. On the defensive end,
Lexi Carfi (Syracuse, N.Y. / Liverpool) and
Sloane Carr (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) each collected a team-high four ground balls, with Carfi also posting a team-high three caused turnovers. First-year goalie
Aimee Lieman (Fair Lawn, N.J. / Fair Lawn) earned the win in net for Plattsburgh, while classmate
Lauren Piscazzi (Merrick, N.Y. / John F. Kennedy) also saw action, making five saves.
For the Spartans, Phoebe Loomis, Taylor Tallmadge, and Bella Gale led the team with three points each. Gale scored three goals, Loomis added two goals and an assist, and Tallmadge recorded a goal and two assists. Lanza Bellomo collected a game-high seven draw controls, while Samantha White made six saves in goal for Castleton.
Plattsburgh held a slight edge over Castleton in shots (29-26), ground balls (25-21), and draw controls (14-11). Both teams went 3-for-6 on free-position shots, and each had strong clearing efficiency, with the Cardinals finishing 14-for-17 and the Spartans 13-for-16.
The Cardinals struck early in the opening quarter as Macdonald split two defenders at the top of the eight-meter arc and found the back of the net at 14:01. Castleton responded with a goal at 13:45, but Plattsburgh answered as Terry finished a feed from O'Hara in transition to regain a 2-1 lead. Macdonald added another goal on a free-position attempt, and Dickinson capped the scoring to give the Cardinals a 4-2 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Castleton opened the scoring in the second quarter, but Plattsburgh responded with a three-goal run to build a 7-3 lead with 6:08 remaining. The Spartans ended the run with a goal at 5:18, but the Cardinals answered with what appeared to be the final tally of the quarter from Macdonald. Castleton, however, added a late goal to cut the deficit to 8-5 heading into halftime.
Out of the break, the Spartans came out strong, scoring back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 8-7. Plattsburgh stayed composed, responding with a four-goal run, sparked by a goal from
Leah Klotz (Highland, N.Y. / Highland) and capped by O'Hara, to extend the lead to 12-7 with 4:31 remaining. That score held heading into the final quarter.
Plattsburgh continued to build on its lead in the fourth quarter, with goals from Terry and Maurer pushing the advantage to 14-7 with 10:10 remaining. Castleton responded with back-to-back goals, but O'Hara's tally at the 2:21 mark sealed a 15-9 victory for the Cardinals.
With the win, Plattsburgh State improves to 2-7 and will return to league action on Friday, Apr. 3, traveling to Morrisville for a 4 p.m. opening draw.
