Plattsburgh Softball Splits Doubleheader at Skidmore, Wins Opener in Extra Innings

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team returned to action following its trip to The Spring Games, traveling to take on the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in a non-conference doubleheader. The two programs last met two seasons ago, splitting a twin bill, and Saturday's matchup proved to be just as competitive. The Cardinals captured a thrilling 8-7 victory in the first game before dropping the nightcap 12-4 to split the series.

Plattsburgh jumped out to an early lead in the opener with a five-run second inning. Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) opened the scoring with an RBI single, followed by run-scoring hits from Bella DeLorenzo (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) and Allison Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa). Jaylyn Linderman (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint)added a sacrifice fly, while another run came home on a Skidmore error to give the Cardinals a 5-0 advantage.

Skidmore responded in the middle innings, scoring twice in the fourth and once in the fifth before taking a 6-5 lead in the sixth on a three-run home run.

The Cardinals answered in the seventh, as Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) delivered an RBI single to even the score at 6-6 and force extra innings.

In the eighth, Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) came through in the clutch, launching a go-ahead two-run home run to put Plattsburgh ahead 8-6. Skidmore pushed across one run in the bottom half, but the Cardinals held on for the victory.

In the second game, Plattsburgh struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of a Skidmore error as Jaylyn Linderman came around to score for an early 1-0 lead.

Skidmore answered quickly, tying the game in the first before erupting for four runs in the second inning to take control at 5-1.

The Cardinals cut into the deficit in the third when Sara Isaacs belted a three-run home run to center field, bringing Plattsburgh within one at 5-4.

However, the Thoroughbreds responded with a run in the fourth and broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, pulling away to secure the 12-4 win and earn the split.

With the series split, Plattsburgh moves to 6-7 on the season and will return to action on Friday, April 3, for its home opener, as the Cardinals begin conference play against Morrisville.
