PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State softball team opened conference play and its home schedule in strong fashion on Friday, sweeping Morrisville in a doubleheader and continuing its unbeaten program history against the Mustangs.
The Cardinals set the tone early in game one, using a dominant third inning to secure an 8-0 run-rule victory.
After two scoreless innings, Plattsburgh erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third. Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) scored the game's first run on an RBI single by Allison Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) before Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) followed with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0. Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) added an RBI single, and Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) broke the game open with a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-0.
The inning continued with Bella DeLorenzo (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) driving in a run on a groundout, and Deo capped the rally with an RBI single to give the Cardinals a commanding 7-0 advantage. Plattsburgh added one more in the fourth when Noll delivered an RBI single, sealing the 8-0 mercy-rule win.
In the circle, Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout. The senior allowed just one hit over five innings while striking out seven and not allowing a run in a commanding performance.
The Cardinals carried that momentum into game two, jumping out to an early lead and holding off a Morrisville comeback attempt to complete the sweep with an 11-6 victory.
Plattsburgh wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Natalie Rogers (Minisink, N.Y./Minisink Valley) delivered a two-run single to score Meghan Stork and Jaylyn Linderman (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint), and Alyssa Hemingway (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) followed with an RBI single to plate Sara Isaacs. Deo added her third RBI of the day with a single to center, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 lead after one.
After Morrisville got on the board in the second, Sara Isaacs responded in a big way, launching a two-run home run to left field to push the lead to 6-1.
The Cardinals continued to build their advantage in the third inning, as Stork doubled in a run before Sara Isaacs added another RBI single to make it 8-1.
Morrisville rallied in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to cut into the deficit, and added another in the fifth to make it 8-6. However, Plattsburgh answered in the bottom half of the fifth. Hemingway drove in a run after reaching on an error, and Deo came through again with a two-run single to extend the lead to 11-6 and put the game out of reach.
With the sweep, the Cardinals improve to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Plattsburgh will return to action tomorrow at home for a conference doubleheader against Cortland.
