Plattsburgh Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team wrapped up its three-game road set with a doubleheader at Fredonia, looking to bounce back after yesterday's first game loss. 

In the opener, Plattsburgh jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning. Braeden Calkins (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) singled to right field, driving in Colin Ross (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) after David Wallace (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) advanced to third. Bostyn Duquette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh)followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing in Wallace, and Jonathan Beale (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) launched a three-run homer to right-center, scoring Marc Cancelliere (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and Calkins.

Fredonia responded in the middle innings, chipping away at the deficit with a run in the fourth and then erupting for five runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run homer by Andrew Tucker and a two-run single from Tucker Schwab, taking an 8-5 lead. The Blue Devils added two more in the seventh on a two-run homer from Brayden Willats, securing the 8-5 victory.

In the nightcap, Fredonia struck first in the opening inning when Domenic Hickock singled to drive in Nick Vitelli. Plattsburgh managed to even the score at 1-1 in the fourth on an unearned run scored by Jonathan Beale, but the Blue Devils regained control in the sixth inning with two runs, including an RBI single from Ryan Mettler and a sacrifice fly from Willats. Fredonia added an insurance run in the eighth on a single by Josh Monti, holding on for a 4-1 win to complete the sweep.

With the doubleheader loss, Plattsburgh falls to 9-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Cardinals will return to action on Tuesday, March 31, for a road matchup against Middlebury.
