ONEONTA N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team returned to conference play on Friday, facing Oswego in the first game of a three-game series hosted by Oneonta. Despite a late push, the Cardinals fell 5-2 in extra innings, still searching for their first SUNYAC victory of the season.
Oswego drew first blood in the third inning when Daniel Winchester singled to left field, driving in Emil Sander for the game's opening run.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Piccirillo (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) delivered a clutch two-RBI double to right field, scoring Ryan Hart (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Ian Warren (Esopus, N.Y./Highland) to give Plattsburgh a 2-1 lead.
The game remained tight through the middle innings until the eighth, when Winchester came through again with a run-scoring triple, bringing home Harry Uvena to tie the game at 2-2 and send the contest into extra innings.
In the 10th, Oswego broke the deadlock. Andrew Dempsey delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Emil Sander and giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Oswego added two more insurance runs on a double by Ben Rollison that scored Daniel Winchester and Harry Uvena, securing the 5-2 victory.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 9-9 overall and 0-7 in SUNYAC play. Plattsburgh will return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader to wrap up the three-game series against Oswego.
