Isabella Girard (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) recorded their first points of the season, with Balfour adding an assist and Girard scoring a goal. Defensively, junior midfielder
Abby Guasconi (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy) collected four ground balls, while junior midfielder
Chase Calandra (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) led the team with four draw controls. First-year goalie
Aimee Lieman (Fair Lawn, N.J. / Fair Lawn) finished with 10 saves, while first-year goalie
Lauren Piscazzi (Merrick, N.Y. / John F. Kennedy) made five saves in the loss.
For the Kangaroos, Caroline Nappi led all players with five points on three goals and two assists, while Hailey LaShomb and Sydney Dunn each recorded three goals. LaShomb also led all players with five draw controls, and Laura Falandys made five saves to earn the win.
Canton held advantages in shots, 35-18, ground balls, 26-19, and draw controls, 13-6. The Cardinals were efficient on clears, going 18-for-22, while the Kangaroos finished 17-for-21. Plattsburgh converted two of three free-position attempts, while Canton went 0-for-1.
The Kangaroos struck first, opening the game with back-to-back goals before Klotz got Plattsburgh on the board off a feed from
Maggie Maurer (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland) to make it 2-1. Barnosky followed soon after, finishing a pass from Klotz on the cut to tie the game at 2-2 with 9:19 remaining. Canton responded with a goal a minute later and added another before Terry capped the quarter's scoring at the 1:23 mark, sending Plattsburgh into the second trailing 4-3.
Plattsburgh carried that momentum into the second quarter, scoring back-to-back goals from Girard and Terry to take a 5-4 lead at 5:58. However, Canton responded with four straight goals to regain control, taking an 8-5 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter saw limited scoring as both teams worked deep into the possession clock, with the Cardinals' defense holding Canton scoreless. Plattsburgh's offense managed the only goal of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 8-6 heading into the final period.
Canton added two goals early in the fourth to extend their lead to 10-6 with 6:57 remaining. Plattsburgh responded with a single goal at 4:08, narrowing the gap to 10-7, which would stand as the final score.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 1-6 (0-2 SUNYAC) and will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 28, hosting Cortland for a 12 p.m. opening draw.
