GENEVA, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State Cardinals continued SUNYAC play on the road Saturday night, edging the William Smith Herons, 2–1, in a tightly contested battle.
William Smith struck first in the opening period when Finley Crosby collected an unassisted goal at 12:12 of the first, giving the Herons an early 1–0 lead. However, Plattsburgh State responded quickly in the second stanza.
Just 1:15 into the second period, first-year Bailey MacKellar (Hamburg, N.Y.) tied the game with a finish on a play set up by seniors Emily Kasprzak (Niagara, N.Y.) and Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J.). Later in the period at 12:26, first-year Zoe Puc (West Palm Beach, Fla.) notched what proved to be the game-winning goal, tallying on assists from sophomore Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea) and MacKellar to put the Cardinals ahead for good.
Plattsburgh's defense tightened in the third period, preserving the one-goal margin. Junior Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass.) earned the win in goal, turning aside 22 saves on the night, while William Smith's Mia Iwicki faced 29 shots in defeat.
The win extends Plattsburgh State's strong run in SUNYAC play and continues momentum following back-to-back overtime victories this week over Middlebury and Buffalo State. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 15–6 overall and 9–1 in conference action.
Earlier in the season, Plattsburgh blanked William Smith, 4–0, in the previous meeting at home to complete the season-series sweep. Plattsburgh State will return home Friday to welcome Oswego in its next SUNYAC showdown.
