Defensive Duel Ends in Scoreless Draw for Cardinals

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team skated to a hard-fought 0-0 tie against Oswego State in SUNYAC play Friday afternoon. In a defensive battle between two SUNYAC contenders, both squads exhibited strong goaltending and timely defensive play to preserve the stalemate through regulation and overtime.

The Cardinals and Lakers combined for numerous scoring opportunities in all three periods, with Plattsburgh peppering the Oswego net with 31 shots on goal while Oswego generated 27 shots in return. However, neither team was able to convert, as the goaltenders turned aside every attempt to break the tie.

Sophomore Maddy Stetson (Wasilla, Alaska) stood tall in net, recording 27 saves and turning aside a flurry of shots in the middle frame. The defensive stalemate was headlined by strong penalty kills, with each side successfully killing off three opportunities. The contest remained scoreless through regulation and a full overtime session, resulting in the official 0-0 tie.

Despite the tie, the contest proceeded to a shootout, where the Cardinals earned a 1-0 edge. First-year Bailey MacKellar (Hamburg, N.Y.) found the back of the net in the shootout, while Stetson secured the three consecutive saves.

Friday's matchup was the third meeting of the season between the two SUNYAC foes. Earlier in the year, the Cardinals earned the first victory in the series during non-conference play at the Norwich East-West Classic, while the Lakers answered with a win in their first conference showdown, handing Plattsburgh its lone SUNYAC loss of the season.

With the tie, the Cardinals move to 15-6-1 overall and 9-1-1 in SUNYAC play. Plattsburgh will be back in action tomorrow on the road against Canton with a 3:00 p.m. faceoff.
