CANTON, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team continued its strong SUNYAC campaign on Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 road victory at Canton. With the win, the Cardinals extended their unbeaten streak to seven games and maintained their position at the top of the conference standings.
Plattsburgh came out firing in the opening period, grabbing control early. Senior Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J.) opened the scoring just 3:30 into the game with a goal set up by first-year Zoe Puc (West Palm Beach, Fla.), giving the Cardinals a quick lead. Less than ten minutes later, first-year Bailey MacKellar (Hamburg, N.Y.) doubled the advantage, burying a goal with assists from senior Su-An Cho (Madison, Ala.) and sophomore Brooke Terry (Massena, N.Y.).
After a tightly contested second frame featuring strong defensive play from both sides, the Cardinals broke the game open in the third period. MacKellar struck again at 3:03 of the final stanza with help from senior Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and Balfour. Later, senior Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J.) sealed the scoring with an insurance goal at 15:58, assisted by Balfour and Puc.
Plattsburgh's defense was anchored by a strong performance in net, as the Cardinals limited Canton's scoring opportunities and secured the shutout behind junior Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass.), who turned aside all 21 shots she faced.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 16-6-1 overall and 10-1-1 in SUNYAC play, putting them in prime position to lock up the No. 1 seed in the conference. Plattsburgh will return home Friday at 7 p.m. to host Cortland as they conclude their final weekend of regular-season action.
