Tavares’ OT Winner Lead Cardinals to 4–3 Home Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team remained at home and continued its SUNYAC schedule Saturday afternoon, defeating the Fredonia Blue Devils, 4–3, in overtime at Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals entered the matchup riding a three-game win streak, including Friday's 3–0 victory over Buffalo State.

Plattsburgh came out flying early, striking just 21 seconds into the game as first-year Gabriel Filion (Montreal, Quebec) found the back of the net with helpers from sophomore Quinn Tavares (Mississauga, Ontario) and senior Lonan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) to give the Cardinals a quick 1–0 lead. Fredonia answered in the second period with a tally from Mathieu Fournier, but Plattsburgh responded with a pair of second-period goals to push the advantage to 3–1. Junior Colin Callanan (Stony Point, N.Y.) scored with assists from first-year Mike English (Hague, N.Y.) and Bulger, and later sophomore Shane Bondy added a goal at 16:14 with helpers from junior Patrick Cole (Lancaster, N.Y.) and senior Brannon Butler (Toronto, Ontario).

The Blue Devils rallied in the third period as Luke Morris and Owen Cross scored to knot the game at 3–3, setting the stage for dramatic extra time. In the overtime frame, Tavares finished a rush with a goal on an assist from senior Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec) to send the home crowd into celebration and secure the 4–3 win for Plattsburgh. In net, first-year Beau Lane (Pembroke, Mass.) earned the victory, stopping 28 shots, while Fredonia's netminder turned aside 49 attempts in defeat.

Plattsburgh's victory extends its impressive run in SUNYAC competition and keeps momentum strong as the regular season nears its conclusion. In the teams' previous meeting earlier this season, the Cardinals pulled off a thrilling 4–3 overtime victory over the same Fredonia squad, completing the season-series sweep. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12–10 overall and 8–7 in conference play and will be back in action Friday to take on Skidmore in the team's final home game of the regular season at 7 p.m.
