Plattsburgh, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team remained at home Friday night for another SUNYAC contest, looking to build on a four-game win streak following last weekend's thrilling 4–3 overtime triumph over Fredonia. On Senior Night, the Cardinals hosted the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in a key matchup as both teams aimed to secure playoff positioning late in the regular season.
Plattsburgh struck first just over a minute into the game when first-year Alexandro Moliner (Delson, Quebec) wired home a goal, assisted by senior Riley Sutherland (Burlington, Ontario), to give the Cardinals an early lead. However, Skidmore responded almost instantly, as Bryce Terry evened the score at 1–1 at the 1:22 mark of the opening period.
In the second period, Skidmore took its first lead when Cooper Rice found the back of the net off a favorable carom from the glass. That goal stood as the difference heading into the third period.
Plattsburgh continued battling, and early in the third, senior captain Spencer Bellina (Medina, Ohio) evened the score once more, assisted by first-year Jaden Ward (East Aurora, N.Y.) and senior Colin Callanan (Stony Point, N.Y.). Skidmore regained the advantage moments later on a tally by Dylan Shane and held on to secure the 3–2 victory.
Despite a strong effort and balanced scoring from the Cardinals' lineup on a night honoring their senior class, Skidmore's timely offense proved decisive. Plattsburgh goaltender Beau Lane (Pembroke, Mass.) faced a heavy workload, turning aside 31 shots, while Skidmore's netminder recorded 45 saves in the win.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 12–11 overall and 8–8 in SUNYAC play. Plattsburgh will conclude the regular season on the road this weekend, traveling to take on SUNYAC rival Potsdam on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the team's final weekend of conference action.
