CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team traveled to Cortland on Friday night and fell to Cortland 54-38 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) road clash in Whitney T. Corey '43 Gymnasium.

Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) and senior forward
Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) both finished with eight points. Sculco also collected three rebounds and a steal, while Walcott added five rebounds and a game-high four blocks. Junior guard
Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) had a solid outing with six points, a game-high five assists, and a team-high three steals.
For the Red Dragons, Jackie Funk and Sam Dembinsky tied for a game-high 12 points while Dembinsky led all players with eight rebounds. Brooke Tillotson chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
Plattsburgh State was solid from the floor, connecting on 32.7% of their shots, though they struggled from beyond the arc, making just 7.1% of three-pointers. Cortland shot slightly better overall, hitting 35.3% from the field and 23.5% from long range. The Red Dragons controlled the boards, 44-27, and held a 6-3 advantage in second-chance points. Both teams capitalized on turnovers, with Plattsburgh scoring 12 points off miscues and Cortland adding 14.
Cortland jumped out to a 9-3 lead before a Walcott layup trimmed Plattsburgh's deficit to 9-5 with 1:39 remaining, and a late layup by
Kaelyn Morgan (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay Central) sent the Cardinals into the second quarter trailing 12-7.
Sculco netted the first points for Plattsburgh with a layup that made the score 16-9 at the 6:51 mark, but a Cortland run pushed the Red Dragons' lead to double digits. A 6-0 burst capped by a Walcott layup made the score 20-15 with 1:36 left before Cortland added four straight points and made the score 24-15 at halftime.
The Cardinals struck first in the third, but the Red Dragons still had the momentum and pushed their lead to as high as 34-20 with 5:04 to go. Plattsburgh answered with a 7-0 run, punctuated by a Walcott layup, to pull within 34-27, but Cortland closed the quarter with four unanswered points to carry a 38-27 advantage into the final quarter.
Walcott got Plattsburgh on the board in the fourth quarter, and a
Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) layup midway through the quarter made the score 43-31 with 5:44 to play. The Cardinals continued to compete down the stretch but couldn't put together a sustained run, as Cortland pulled away and Plattsburgh ultimately fell 54-38.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State's three-game winning streak is snapped, and they fall to 12-8 (7-6 SUNYAC). The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 7, when the team travels to Morrisville for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
