MacKellar Nets OT Winner, as Cardinals Top No. 4 Middlebury

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The No. 15 Plattsburgh State Cardinals returned home Tuesday night and delivered a dramatic non-conference victory over No. 4 Middlebury College, topping the Panthers 2–1 in overtime at Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

In a hard-fought clash between two nationally ranked teams, Middlebury struck first early in the second period when Avery McInerny converted on a goal to give the Panthers a 1–0 lead. Plattsburgh dictated play and created numerous quality chances throughout the first 30 minutes, but the Cardinals were unable to break through on the scoreboard.

Plattsburgh eventually answered just over midway through the second frame, as first-year Bailey MacKellar (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished a play set up by seniors Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J.) to knot the score at 1–1. The teams battled through the third period with neither side able to find the game-winner, sending the contest into sudden-death overtime.

With the clock winding down in the extra session, MacKellar struck again for the Cardinals, burying a Kasprzak feed for her second goal of the night and lifting the Cardinals to a 2–1 victory. Sophomore goaltender Maddy Stetson (Wasilla, Alaska) stood tall in net for Plattsburgh, making 14 saves in the win, while Middlebury's Sophia Will earned 42 saves for the Panthers.

The victory marked a strong effort for the Cardinals, who entered the game winners of seven of their last eight and seeking revenge after a defeat earlier this season in the Panther/Cardinal Classic against the same Middlebury side. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 13–6 and will be back in action Friday as they resume conference play against Buffalo State at 7 p.m.
