PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team returned home Wednesday and earned a convincing 4-0 victory over new conference opponent Delhi in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Cardinals wasted little time establishing control of the contest, outshooting Delhi by a 29-0 margin and putting 13 shots on target. Plattsburgh also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Plattsburgh opened the scoring in the 27th minute when senior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. The Cardinals carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting Delhi, 16-0, in the opening 45 minutes.
The Cardinals continued to apply pressure early in the second half. In the 50th minute, fifth-year Alexis Patrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Myers to extend the Plattsburgh lead to 2-0.
Just over three minutes later, Myers struck again, scoring her second goal of the contest off an assist from junior Bailee Lafountain (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) to make it 3-0.
Plattsburgh added one more goal in the 73rd minute when senior Ellie Graney (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors) scored her first of the season, with senior Lilley Keyser (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) providing the assist. The Cardinals' defense then closed out the shutout to secure the 4-0 victory.
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 5-2-4 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. Plattsburgh State will be back in action Saturday, when the Cardinals hit the road to take on Oswego in another conference matchup.
