Cardinals Shut Out Oswego on the Road, Extend Strong Start to SUNYAC Play

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team continued its strong start to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, earning a road victory over Oswego after entering the matchup fresh off a 4-0 home win over Delhi on Wednesday. The Cardinals looked to build on that momentum against a Lakers squad they had drawn with in each of the previous two seasons.

Plattsburgh broke through in the 30th minute when senior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) scored her sixth goal of the season at 29:49 to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Plattsburgh carried the advantage into halftime, outshooting Oswego 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes while earning five more corner kicks than the Lakers.

The Cardinals extended their lead early in the second half when sophomore Alana DeLaCruz (Albany, N.Y./Shaker) found the back of the net at 52:38 for her fourth goal of the season. Junior Bailee Lafountain (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) provided the assist, giving Plattsburgh a two-goal cushion.

Plattsburgh continued to apply pressure and added another goal at 61:01 when transfer Kyra Whitman (Stafford, Texas/Fort Bend Christian Academy) scored her third of the season. Sophomore Leah Warren (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) picked up the assist as the Cardinals pushed their advantage to 3-0.

Defensively, Plattsburgh held firm throughout the contest to preserve the shutout. The Cardinals finished with a 20-15 advantage in shots and put nine attempts on target, while the Lakers recorded six shots on goal.

With the victory, Plattsburgh State improves to 6-2-4 overall and 3-0-1 in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals will return to action Wednesday, heading back on the road to take on Cantonas they look to continue their strong run in conference competition.
