Cardinals Earn Road Point in 2-2 Draw at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Oneonta Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play, earning a point on the road after building an early two-goal advantage.

The Cardinals entered the contest fresh off a SUNYAC-opening victory over Potsdam and continued conference play against an Oneonta side they had defeated in four of their previous five meetings. Plattsburgh most recently defeated the Red Dragons, 2-0, at home last season.

Plattsburgh wasted little time taking control of the match, scoring twice in the opening 13 minutes.

Senior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) scored her third goal of the season at 7:06, giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. Senior Kyra Whitman (Stafford, Texas/Fort Bend Christian Academy) was credited with the assist.

Just under six minutes later, Myers struck again, finding the back of the net at 12:58 to double the Plattsburgh advantage. Sophomore Alana DeLaCruz (Albany, N.Y./Shaker) picked up the assist on the play as the Cardinals carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Oneonta responded in the second half, cutting the deficit in half at 64:03 when Violet Mattoni scored off an assist from Devyn Kelly.

The Red Dragons continued to pressure the Cardinals and eventually found the equalizer in the 75th minute. Bella Mattoni scored at 74:58, with Violet Mattoni earning the assist, bringing the match even at 2-2.

Neither team could find a go-ahead goal during the final 15 minutes, as the Cardinals and Red Dragons settled for the draw.

Oneonta finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots and held an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central) made nine saves for the Cardinals, including six in the first half, to help keep Plattsburgh in front early. Oneonta recorded three saves.

With the draw, Plattsburgh State moves to 4-2-4 overall and 1-0-1 in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals return home Wednesday as they continue conference play against Delhi. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
