Northfield, Vt. — The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team wrapped up its non-conference schedule Tuesday night with a hard-fought 3–2 overtime loss at Norwich. In their third game in five days, the Cardinals battled through a competitive contest before a late Norwich power-play tally in extra time lifted the Cadets past SUNY Plattsburgh at Kreitzberg Arena.
Plattsburgh struck first in the opening period when first-year Ty Oller (Wayne, N.J.) opened the scoring just over seven minutes in, assisted by fellow first-year Devin Mauro (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), giving the Cardinals an early lead. Norwich answered quickly just over two minutes later, as Colin Elliott knotted the game at 1–1. Midway through the second period, Elliott struck again on the power play to put the Cadets ahead 2–1 heading into the final frame.
Late in the third, Plattsburgh's Aaron Catron (Middletown, Del.) pushed the contest back to even, finishing a play with helpers from sophomore Patrick Cole (Lancaster, N.Y.) and senior Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec) with less than two minutes remaining to send the game to overtime. While both teams had opportunities in the extra period, it was Boyd Stahlbaum who delivered the game-winning goal on a Cadet power play at 3:28 of overtime, securing a 3–2 victory for Norwich.
Goaltender Sami Molu was strong in net for Norwich, turning aside 19 shots, while Plattsburgh's
Dominik Bovan (Bratislava, Slovakia) stopped 26. With the result, Plattsburgh drops to 7–6 on the season and will return to conference action on the road this weekend, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. against Skidmore.
