SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team looked to snap a two-game skid as it returned to conference play on the road against SUNYAC newcomer Skidmore on Saturday evening.
Plattsburgh entered the matchup riding the program's 11-1 all-time advantage over Skidmore, but the Thoroughbreds jumped out early and carried momentum throughout the contest.
Skidmore struck first near the midway point of the opening period when Matthew Franzoi netted an even-strength goal to give the home side the early lead. The Thoroughbreds extended their advantage early in the second period, as Franzoi tallied his second goal of the game just minutes into the period to make it 2–0. The Cardinals responded quickly, scoring twice in a 31-second span to even the contest. Junior Vladislav Pshenichnikov (Moscow, Russia) jump-started the rally with a shorthanded goal at 7:52, before senior Riley Sutherland (Burlington, Ontario) followed with an even-strength marker at 8:23 to tie the game at 2–2.
However, Skidmore responded with two third-period goals to pull ahead. Coleman Jenkins put the Thoroughbreds back on top in the closing minutes, and Tyler Fogu added an empty-net shorthanded goal to seal the 4–2 final.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 7–7 overall (3–4–0 SUNYAC) on the season. Plattsburgh State will return to action on Friday, January 16, when it resumes SUNYAC play at home against Canton. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
