PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team returned home Friday night looking to snap a three-game skid when it welcomed SUNY Canton to the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. In a tightly contested SUNYAC matchup, the Cardinals battled throughout, but ultimately fell 3-1 to the Kangaroos.
Canton struck early in the first period, scoring twice in quick succession. A power-play goal by Colton Alexander at 15:03 opened the scoring before Scott Cremen added another just over a minute later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Plattsburgh State looked to answer in the middle period, generating offensive chances and pressuring the Canton net, but the Cardinals were unable to solve Canton goaltender Trey Miller, who turned aside 43 shots on the night.
The Cardinals got on the board early in the third period when senior Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec American International College) converted a clean opportunity at 3:51, assisted by sophomore Quinn Tavares (Mississauga, Ontario Salve Regina University) and first-year Jaden Ward (East Aurora, N.Y. Buffalo Jr. Sabres OJHL), cutting Canton's lead to one. Plattsburgh carried momentum for much of the period, but the Kangaroos withstood the surge and added an empty-net goal from Alexander at 19:06.
With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play and will be back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. as they continue SUNYAC action hosting Potsdam at home.
