Cardinals Fall 5–4 in Overtime to Elmira at Norwich East-West Hockey Classic

Northfield, Vt. — The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team battled back in a tightly contested matchup at the Norwich East-West Hockey Classic, but ultimately fell 5–4 in overtime to Elmira College on Sunday night. The loss extends the Cardinals' skid to four games as they look to regain momentum midseason.

Elmira opened the scoring early, just four minutes into the contest, before Plattsburgh answered two minutes later when senior Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J.) scored seven minutes into the first period. Balfour's goal, assisted by senior Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J.) and sophomore Tessa Morris (Grand Island, N.Y.), knotted the contest at 1–1. Moments later, sophomore Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla.) gave the Cardinals a 2–1 lead with a tally midway through the period, again set up by Morris and junior Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont.).

Elmira responded late in the opening stanza to even the score and carried that momentum into the second period. The Soaring Eagles regained the lead with a power-play goal with five minutes remaining in the period, only to see first-year Riley Keller (Cuba, N.Y.) tie the game at 3–3 before the second intermission. Plattsburgh regained the lead just minutes into the third period on a goal from first-year Bailey MacKellar (Hamburg, N.Y.).

Elmira's Anna Lugge answered just minutes later, forcing a 4–4 score and pushing the game into overtime. In the extra session, Iliana Smith netted the game-winner for the Eagles at 3:02 of OT to lift Elmira to the victory.

The Cardinals now turn their focus to the second day of the Norwich Classic as they take on fellow SUNYAC opponent Oswego State at 1 p.m.
