Women’s Basketball Downs Canton, 74-63, in Home SUNYAC Action

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team splits season series with a 74-63 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Canton. Senior forward Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) paced the Cardinals with a game-high 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds and collecting a steal.

The Cardinals had four other players reach double figures as junior guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) was next in scoring with 12 points, a game-high nine assists, five rebounds, and two steals. Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes), Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest), and Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central) all finished with 11 points. Johannesen added three rebounds, two assists, and a steal, Peterson-Ross added seven rebounds and an assist, and DuBois added six rebounds.

For the Kangaroos, Sierra Pabo led the team in scoring with 13 points to go with a team-high seven assists and six rebounds. Kat McRobbie-Taru chipped in 10 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.

Plattsburgh State shot an efficient 42.5% from the field and 40.0% from beyond the arc, knocking down eight three-pointers. Canton finished at 36.1% shooting but struggled from deep at 22.7%. The Cardinals held a 43-38 rebounding advantage, with both teams scoring eight second-chance points. Canton did capitalize on turnovers, outscoring Plattsburgh State 15-10 in points off turnovers.

The Cardinals took control quickly after a DuBois layup gave Plattsburgh a 9-3 lead with 7:37 remaining. A 5–0 spurt, highlighted by a Greek triple, stretched the lead to 18-8 before a Sculco layup and a Johannesen three closed the quarter, giving the Cardinals a 27-12 lead heading into the second.

The second quarter saw Plattsburgh build its lead to as high as 17 after a Sculco layup made the score 31-14 at the 7:45 mark. However, Canton battled back and cut Plattsburgh's lead to eight, sending the Cardinals into the break with a 42-34 lead.

Plattsburgh extended its lead in the third quarter after an 11-0 tear led by Walcott made the score 53-35 with 6:25 to play. Canton answered with a run of its own, trimming the deficit as a DuBois layup closed the scoring and made it 55-48 after three quarters.

The Cardinals maintained control throughout the fourth, stretching the lead to a game-high 69-50 and securing a 74-63 win.

With the win, Plattsburgh State wins its third game in a row and rises to 12-7 (7-5 SUNYAC). The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 6, when the team travels to Cortland for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
