Women’s Basketball Tops Oswego State, 76-64, in SUNYAC Home Action

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team defended home court with a 76–64 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Oswego State on Friday night. Sophomore forward Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central) led the charge with a game-high 20 points, along with six rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

Junior guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) has a strong showing as well, recording 15 points, a game-high eight assists, and five rebounds. Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) also scored in double figures with 11 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high three steals. Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) added nine points, and Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) led all players with 10 rebounds to pair with her six points and four assists.

For the Lakers, Bri Weaver led her team in scoring with 14 points, and right behind her was Giavanna White-Principio with 13 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Sarah Hirschler chipped in 12 points and Zhane Holmes 11.

Plattsburgh State was sharp offensively, shooting 50.0% from the field and an efficient 45.8% from three-point range, knocking down 11 triples. Oswego State finished at 36.8% shooting overall and 23.8% from beyond the arc. The Cardinals held a strong rebounding edge, 43-32, though the Lakers capitalized on second-chance opportunities (17-12) and points off turnovers (27-15).

A Peterson-Ross three-pointer got action started in the first, followed by a Walcott layup as Plattsburgh led 5-0 early in the game. The Lakers' offense came alive and tied the game multiple times, but a 9-0 run to close the first quarter gave the Cardinals a 28-16 lead heading into the second.

The second quarter featured back-and-forth action, but Plattsburgh maintained its double-digit lead and extended it with an 8-0 surge, capped by a Greek three-pointer to make it 45–26 with 0:58 remaining. It was Greek again as a late layup sent Plattsburgh into halftime with a 47-29 lead.

Back-to-back layups to open the third quarter pushed Plattsburgh to its largest lead of the game, 51-29, with 9:18 remaining. DuBois later knocked down a three-pointer, and a free throw by Walcott closed out the scoring in the quarter as Plattsburgh carried a 58-41 lead into the final quarter.

The Lakers chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter, but Plattsburgh had an answer each time as a 5-0 burst from DuBois pushed the advantage to 69-51 with 5:28 remaining. The Cardinals stayed in control down the stretch, and a layup by Kaelyn Morgan (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay Central) put the finishing touches on a 76-64 victory.

With the win, Plattsburgh State wins its second game in a row and rises to 11-7 (6-5 SUNYAC). The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 31, when the team hosts Canton for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
