POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team cruised to a 76-61 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Potsdam on Tuesday night. Sophomore forward
Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central) netted a career and game-high 23 points to go with four rebounds, a team-high two blocks, and a steal.
Junior guard
Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) had a strong performance, racking up 13 points and a career and game-high six steals.
Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) finished with 11 points and five rebounds, while
Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) added eight points, three rebounds, and two steals. Junior guard
Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) had a career day, dishing out a career-high 13 assists, tying the program record for assists in a game. She also recorded seven points, four rebounds, and three steals.
For the Bears, Lucie Scarpine led her team in points with 18, followed by DaeLynn Alcock with 17 points and seven rebounds. Kierra Baxter also reached double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.
Plattsburgh had a strong shooting night, connecting on 42.4% from the field, 45.8% from three-point range with 11 triples, and 90.0% from the free-throw line. Potsdam was solid as well, shooting 39.3% from the floor and 34.8% from long range. The Cardinals held a 40-33 advantage on the boards, while Potsdam led in second-chance points, 10-6. Plattsburgh also controlled points off turnovers, 24-17.
Walcott opened the scoring in the first quarter as
Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) later tacked on a three-pointer, giving Plattsburgh a 5-2 lead with 6:13 remaining. Potsdam found its rhythm and tied the score at 7, but Plattsburgh answered with a 5-0 burst and capped the quarter with two free throws from Sculco to carry a 17-12 lead into the second quarter.
Plattsburgh struck first in the second with a DuBois layup and continued to build momentum after a Johannesen three-pointer made the score 33-21 at the 5:59 mark. Potsdam fought back after Plattsburgh opened up a double-digit lead, cutting the deficit to seven as the Cardinals held a 40-33 edge at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Bears surge to a 43-40 lead with 7:10 to play thanks to a 10-0 run. The Bears maintained the lead until Plattsburgh closed the quarter with a 6-0 run, capped by a Sculco layup, to take a 55-52 advantage into the final quarter.
It didn't take long for the Cardinals to regain control after a 10-0 tear led by Wilson and
Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) extended Plattsburgh's lead to 65-52 with 7:44 to play. Plattsburgh cruised down the stretch, with Wilson adding a late three-pointer to extend the Cardinals' largest lead to 76-57, en route to a 76-61 victory.
With the win, Plattsburgh State snaps its three-game skid and moves to 10-7 (5-5 SUNYAC). The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 30, when the team hosts Oswego State for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
